The History of Mission dates back to 1829 when the Quakers established the Shawnee Mission. Mission and its immediate surrounding areas were pivotal to the Santa Fe Trail. It is said that the presence of a fresh water spring in the site of present day Mission made the location ideal for thirsty travelers and their horses.

From its origins in 1829, the town grew steadily into the 1920’s and 1930’s. The proximity to Kansas City Missouri commerce and the railroads were no doubt the catalyst that made the town thrive.

Post WWII, the housing boom and returning GI’s contributed richly to the growth and prosperity of Mission, KS. To this day, the town retains its post-war-look with smaller homes on large lots versus today’s typical larger homes on smaller lots of suburbia.

Today, Merriam is a thriving community of charming homes and unique appeal that makes Merriam a wonderful place to live. The community is vibrant and with its proximity to Kansas City and other delightful Johnson County cities, presents an appealing environment.
