Shawnee Kansas is a suburb of Kansas City located in the northeast of Johnson County. It is considered part of the greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area. Nearby cities include: Mission, Merriam, Overland Park, Prairie Village, Lenexa, Leawood, Roeland Park, and Kansas City Missouri.
The city of Shawnee was named after the Shawnee Indians who were relocated to the area in the late 1820’s from Missouri and Ohio. In 1825, the US government gave the Shawnee Indians over 1.5 million acres of land in exchange for territories in Missouri for settlers. In 1854, a new treaty was struck and the Indians sold back all but 200,000 acres of land to allow for further pioneer settlements.
Located at the intersection of early military and other roads leading to the Santa Fe Trail, the areas proved to be critical in events leading to and beyond the Civil War.
Caught in the intense battle between anti and pro-slavery fighters, Shawnee was burned to the ground during these turbulent border struggles. Despite these obstacles, the rich abundance of resources and the critical location fueled the cities importance and growth.
Post WWII, the housing boom and returning GI’s contributed richly to the growth and prosperity of Shawnee, KS. This growth and proximity to surrounding communities has allowed Shawnee to thrive. In fact, in 2010, Shawnee was ranked at number 17th in the US for best places to live.
